Bangkok jumps on the electro festivals stage.

We knew for long but had promised not to kiss and tell so we decided not to write in this blog until the secret was revealed, too afraid our fingers would slip and let the world know. Now it seems everyone is aware of the biggest electronic event ever in Thailand.

Unless you don't read newspapers or free city-magazines, nor listen to the radio, watch Channel V, ride the BTS or surf the internet, you have heard of Culture One, Club Culture's very own music festival. Pfel, from the awesome Beatorrent duo ( live at Club Culture Dec. 28 ), was telling us few days ago even China is hit by the event promotion. Believe.

One night event, held on Saturday 19 January, BITEC Bangna will rumble by the 6 stages sound-systems. The line-up is as you can guess huge and there will be a bit of everything for everyone.

David Morales will finally debut in Bangkok and celebrate his 10 years Def-Mix label anniversary.

Also flying in, but not novice on this land, Marco V and John 00 Fleming will electro and trance respectively. Or not actually, we know them as being keen on both genre.

We're very excited to see Stanton Warriors, easily our biggest expectation of the festival if we don't mention the girls in clad outfits, bathing around the lake.

Back to the line-up with Dudesweet's guest Filthy Dukes, freshly back from their gig at London's Fabric. The creative Bangkok party crew will host a full stage with local guests.

The extensive list of acts is available on the festival website.

When a party turns tragedy

The Revolutionaire kept up the expectation we had in terms of music quality and friendly vibe. The guest DJs were wicked and Montonn Jira proved just how minimal techno can be sexy and mental.
From the start to the very end, the packed Club Culture was vibrating with the music. It just went a big wrong when the music stopped and an argument exploded at the back of the room. The reason of the row, whatever it is, wasted the feeling of having spent a perfect night.
Fights in clubs are nothing surprising but idiots throwing glasses at each other after such a wicked party darkened the vibe.
On the same night, but another scale, Carl Cox had to witness what has probably been the worst gig of his career. While playing in Caracas,Venezuela, a gunman started shooting in the crowd and killed four people.
From his website Carl Cox posted this :

“I am deeply shocked and still stunned by the events of this Saturday [3rd November].
My condolences go out to victims that were caught up in this horrific act that took place at this gig.
I am informed that it was gang related and feel so sad that anybody would act in such a manner when the event was full of 7000 people having fun!
I will try my best to continue on the tour across South America however deeply shocked and shaken I am."

The VJ captured the carnage and posted it on Youtube. We're putting up the vid but are warning you of its shocking content.

And yet another revolution

Our good friends at Glitch Organisation are throwing a party this Saturday at Club Culture you shouldn't ignore.

Bringing electro-disco head Bangkok Impact and his label mate DJ TLR from Holland, one can expect the shindig to be an explosive cocktail of italo-disco beats crossed with full-on Detroit electro basslines.

Not Happy Jan, from Melbourne's Meccanoid collective will open the night as early as 9pm.

On top of that, and God knows we missed him, Montonn Jira will celebrate his return in town for a groovy minimal dj-set.
And the best part : it's free entry !

WIN : B1,000 vouchers at Yohii

Yohii is that kind of place perfect to chill after a long day work. Popular concept for drinking and sharing dishes with friends or colleagues, Izakaya restaurants are few in Bangkok.
Located on Kaset Nawamin Rd, in Town in Town, Yohii offers a wide range of kushiyaki, sushi, sashimi, donburi and fusion dishes.
Their extensive menu is available on their website, just flip the book to get an idea of what you can get. Trust us, it is as good as it looks and the portion are large enough to be shared with friends.
The experience wouldn't be complete if you were only having food at Yohii. Izakaya restaurants are originally casual places where Japanese would drink and order food on the side.

Order Yohii's signature drink Soju, an orange alcoholic beverage made with yogurt. If you don't feel adventurous enough, sake is always a good bet.
A lounge music DJ and a live band add their touch to the vibe without being annoyingly loud. There is an outdoor area if you are looking to chill without freezing.
We have 6 vouchers worth B1,000 each to give away.

Send us an email at buzzincontest@gmail.com with your full name and tell us what makes you buzz. We'll quickly get back in touch if you have won.

Zoukout 2007 line-up announced

It seems this year Zoukout festival is much more interesting in number of names than its previous edition. The Singaporean festival has put up a versatile list of acts for 12 hours of party.
If you haven't made up your mind on whether you will travel to Global Gathering Malaysia, you should seriously consider the other option : Zoukout.

Annual event, the seventh edition will be held on Santosa beach on December 8.

The DJs invited are top-players and the line-up doesn't disappoint.

Osunlade and Gilles Peterson are invited to play their jazzy and deep house electronica.
Mouth-watering are the performances of two other deep duos who are not regulars of clubs this side of Asia : Ame and Bookashade.

No newbies, them, Carl Cox and Armin Van Buuren will rock the festival-goers' socks with pounding beats and bosh synths.

Uffie is also on the bill. The Ed Banger's iconic female, with DJ Feadz behind his laptop, will have to maintain her show on a huge stage which can be risky. For a smaller concert of her and Feadz, another date is set in Bangkok. Keep your eyes open.

Genre en vogue, Zoukout couldn't have happened without its "nu-rave" concert. We're happy to learn they decided not to fly Klaxons, hurray, instead bringing Does It Offend you, Yeah ?

We support this wise decision but are even more looking forward to see DJ Craze and MC Armanni.

More names will be announced in the days to come if you need more to be convinced. With a bill that massive you shouldn't need to.
The festival website is being updated regularly with the latest confirmations.

Open door DJs

Last year, German magazine Groove had the good idea to sneak in German DJs living-rooms and publish pictures of what they had found. Their "show me what's your room like, I'll tell you who you are" photo-story was an insight into each DJ habitat and the mess they live in ( for some of them ).

Some pictures ran in that issue :

Ellen Allien

DJ Hell

Richie Hawtin

Sven Vath

Ricardo Villalobos

And the winner of the messiest room was DJ Koze ( notice the lonely flip-flop ) :

A year later, Groove selected another bunch of names and shot their places. The results are visible here.

Worth pointing out is Dixon, and his taste in wallpaper :

Radio-ahead

Radiohead has finally announced a successor to their last album. " In Rainbows " will be available to all October 10 but don't try to find it in stores. The band has decided to make it available for download only.
This represents a considerable challenge for the music industry since Radiohead can be considered as one of the most respected and innovative band.
Furthermore, the download price will be fixed by the fans themselves.
" It's up to you " is the message shown after clicking on a price box.

Samim is all over the place

Every now and then a track comes up from nowhere, or almost, and everyone agrees on it. That description fits perfectly Samim's " Heater ". Minimal yet funky, the track's biggest and daring originality is its accordion hook leading to, like its title suggests, raise the heat.

Initially signed on the always quality-delivering Get Physical label, it got played by almost all the electro DJs. From Richie Hawtin to Claude von Stroke, Pete Tong and Eric Morillo, the tune turned massive in Ibiza and will be re-released soon by Ministry Of Sound.
Now that doesn't sound too good since MOS is always prompt in destroying a track's soul by putting a vocal over it and leave it to dozen of remixers.

The unexpected success pushed the band and label to shoot a video that will take the director to 9 cities around the world, in no more than 14 days.
The crew will be in Bangkok on September 28th for a day of shooting. We will try to hook up with them and see how's their project going on.

If you want to listen to the track on a proper soundsystem, get down to Club Culture tomorrow for Wrong Disco, where the track has been championed by DJ K-Jet for the past few months.

See here how Richie Hawtin plays the accordion :

Kanye gets So-Me's treatment

Music medias have been mentioning the release of Kanye West and 50 Cent new albums, coincidentally this month, as the ultimate showdown. Each artist doing his best to outshine the other.
While we will not buy into this lame media topic ( Kanye is of course the only winner ), the latest video from Kanye West is worth a blog post.
Bearing an air of deja-vu with the smart and funky Justice's D.A.N.C.E., 50 Cent is going to have a hard time beating this.

Directed by Jonas and Francois with So-Me, this is another bullet in Kanye's magazine.

Edit 21/09/07 : as expected, Kanye's album has trounced 50 Cent's according to the website Billboard.com. Kanye West's " Graduation" has been sold 957,000 while 50 Cent's " Curiis" has reached 691,000 copies. So much for you, gangsta.

Richie Hawtin minuses his impact on the planet

It was a matter of time before DJs and label get concerned and loud about protecting the environment. After minimalizing techno music, Richie Hawtin has decided to minimalize his impact on the planet.

Ahead of the scene when it comes to music, experimentation and new technologies, Hawtin fully supports digital download as clearly written in a statement released recently in his name and his labels Minus and Plus 8.

" In response to the times we live in, and due to the ever-increasing amount of proof regarding the impact of human activity on our planet, I am pleased to announce our current environmental initiative. The aim of this strategy is to one day becomea carbon neutral company. I also hope that our efforts will both encourage and inspire other musicians, DJ’s & entertainment related companies/individuals to find their own ways to limit their impact on global climate change.

Richie Hawtin AIR TRAVEL

(...) Since January 1st of this year, in cooperation with Berlin based Atmosfair (http://www.atmosfair.de/), we have been offsetting all of my flight carbon emissions. In addition, these offsets have been recently extended to cover all air travel made by Minus employees.

Carbon Offsetting is the concept of buying carbon credits against one’s CO2 emissions to become carbon neutral. These carbon offsets are then used to contribute toward Atmosfair’s various environmentally conscious worldwide projects that adhere to the internationally accepted Gold Standard certification rules (http://www.cdmgoldstandard.org/).
I feel that carbon offsetting should be used in conjunction with other courses of action to minimise our global footprint. Therefore we are continuing to investigate alternative ways of reducing our combined CO2 output through alternative travel choices such as the use of public transport, cars, trains, bikes and combined artist bus tours such as the “Minus Min2MAX2006 USA Bus Tour”. We have also introduced other personal and internal office initiatives such as “green” sustainable electricity suppliers.

Minus MANUFACTURING IMPACT

In realistic terms we are still a music company whose revenue is generated from manufacturing items that are unfortunately harmful to the environment. Most of this damage can be attributed to the manufacturing of vinyl records and compact discs.
While we will continue to support the older paradigm of music lovers and release most major releases on vinyl and/or CD,we have meanwhile focused our attention on the packaging of these products.
All new 2007 Minus/Plus 8 vinyl & CDreleases have been packaged in either sustainable FSC (www.fscus.org) certified papers and/or a combination of recycledpapers. In addition we have also introduced a new CD packaging design that contains no plastics. We are also taking steps to introduce these types of papers into other areas of the company, and encouraging many of ourworldwide partners & promoters to also be more conscious of the available alternatives.

We will also continue to strengthen our support of digital download technologies that promote a more environmentallyfriendly music distribution system. Currently we are introducing the entire Minus catalogue on our new online store(www.m-nus.com), as well as working with our partner Beatport (www.beatport.com) to ensure viable digital alternatives topurchasing physical goods.
Listen differently, download digitally!
As there is always new research and data in the ever changing area of global climate change, we will continue to evaluateour position and the steps that we can make towards being as environmentally friendly and as neutral as possible.
Sincerely,
Richie Hawtin, President Minus Inc. / Plus 8 Records Ltd. / Minus Multimedia GmbH"

A disco thing

What is better to create a buzz than a teaser keeping the secret intact but exciting enough to make you crave?
Sony knows it and with this advertisement for their new toy ( ? ), Rolly, the blogosphere is vibrating of rumors and questions.
Is it a moving digital audio player ? A lunatic robot pet ? An extension for the Playstation 3 ? Does it open beer cans ?

To this day, Sony has only confirmed Rolly is an audio player without a display and with a single button. No release date has been set yet.
Just enjoy the ad and its soundtrack : the fantastic Scenario Rock's Skitzo Dancer remixed by Justice.

What's popping Bangkok ?

2006 was a hectic year in terms of clubbing in Bangkok. Week after week, it seemed the city was finally awaking and making the most of the 2am closing time. Thanks to the Bangkok party collectives, we witnessed some crazy gigs with headliners we weren't hoping to see here before decades. Without mentioning the smaller parties featuring local dj's rocking the pubs and bars almost every night.
Then Club Astra closed, and it all fell down.

Halfway through the year 2007, we can't help but feel nostalgic. Big acts have been rare, the feeling of coming together has long faded and if a party gathers more than 150 people, it ought to be called a success.

Is it realistic to expect the next 6 months to be reminiscent of 2006 ? To this question we are answering yes.

From the words of the party organisers themselves, the closer we will get to the end of the year, the more exciting our weekends will be. Now busy in Ibiza and touring summer festivals, bands and DJs will resume their normal club schedules in the weeks to come.
Proof of this are two of the names already lined up to play Bangkok : Armin Van Buuren ( 4.10.07 ) and Paul Van Dyk (30.08.07). Trance-heads will flock en masse to Narcissus and Astra respectively to witness those two events, signs of good things to come.

Astra (http://www.club-astra.com/) will open its doors again a week later for the return of Ladytron's heartthrob, Reuben Wu (7.09.07). His performance last year can be now seen as the turning point in Dudesweet's music policy. Switching abruptly from the full-on rock sound to the latest electro flavor ( call it indietronica or nu-rave ), Note, Air and their fellow partners will be 2007 saviors if Digitalism accept their invitation making us predict the biggest party of the year.

Following the steps of Astra in the versatility of its events, Club Culture (www.myspace.com/club_culture_bkk) has been building its club fame around the long list of quality resident DJs. Each night of the week is devoted to a music style and there is little doubt it is where you can find the best soundsystem of the city. Since its opening, the club has lacked proper headliners leaving Astra fans like a herd of lost sheeps. The club management has now confirmed the booking of Phil Hartnoll from the legendary band Orbital (7.09/07). Later this year, the club should see, among others, the comeback of Deep Dish and the long-awaited arrival of the Scratch Perverts (Tony Vegas, Prime Cuts and Plus 1) confirming Club Culture aims at putting up various events mixing local, regional and international guests as well as musical genres. The New-Year bash should be quite amazing providing the club gets whom it's hoping.

All this shouldn't be complete without mentioning Bed Supperclub (http://www.bedsupperclub.com/) and Qbar (http://www.qbarbangkok.com/) which will put up their own nights and will receive their fair share of international DJs.

However, we are not buying what Club Cream and Twisted Republic are trying to sell us.
After a visit at Cream and their official opening last weekend, it is difficult to imagine the club becoming a major player for clubbers thirsty of beats. In fact, we bet it is a matter of months, if not weeks, before they decide to close the white room ( where a DJ spins house ), or simply turn it into another hip-hop venue in a venue for Ekamai/Thonglor posers and their skanky boos. For those who wonder, Cream Bangkok has nothing in common with the Cream franchise from the UK, but the name.
Good luck to Twisted Republic (http://www.twistedrepublic.com/) in their quest of bringing us the ultimate clubbing experience. We will be there whenever they are ready.

The buzz is on for Vertigo and its club project, supposedly Astra and the club next door revamped in a brand new place. While no opening date is set (at least not before November apparently) and conflicting reports about the purchase have been heard, we rest assured that if the place happens to open, it will inflict some serious scarification to Bangkok clubbing scene. The Vertigo crew has booked a list of class-A names, topped by Laurent Garnier (announced for 29.12.07) for his second visit this year, all due to play at Club 808, the ongoing club-project name.

Malaysia gets Global

Mid-august and you wish you were in Ibiza. Like every summer, the cream of the crop of the electronic music, all spektrum included are flying from the island to a huge festival in the UK back again to the island, leaving us, here, wondering why, why, oh why isn't there an electronic festival in a reasonable mile-radius.

The good news is : Global Gathering ( GG ) is coming to the rescue.
The bad news is : it won't be in Thailand.

Malaysian organisers Pervert Designs are teaming up with the annual UK festival GG to organise what seems to be a serious competitor to Singaporean festival, Zoukout. If the 2007 Zoukout line-up is still being kept secret, names have been announced for GG South-East Asia edition.

Spread on 6 stages, the festival will put the local Malaysian scene at the forefront while inviting big-guns to join in the festivities. To this day, 46 acts are on the bill, more international guests due to be announced in the days to come. Highlights of the festival will be Sander Van Doorn's bosh-trance at the Godskitchen arena, Layo and Bushwacka!'s hypnotic tech-house. Live performances from French goth-electro Blackstrobe and old-school hip hop dons Jungle Brothers, on the same stage but hopefully not crashing into another, sound promising. Latest addition to this stage named Freedom Electric is the fluo-duo Simian Mobile Disco.

Bangkok represent with Futon showcasing their second album live between Blackstrobe and Simian, Bee flying from a stage to another to deliver with DJ Oum his Rehab selection in the evening.

We'll keep updating this post as the list goes on, and if any name deserves to be mentioned.

Your mind is already made up ? Tickets are available at http://www.thaiticketmaster.com/

Lollapalooza going global?

Lollapalooza was one of the festivals that set the benchmark for ‘alternative’ events of its ilk throughout the world. After going through its ups and downs over the years it’s still going strong in 2007, with a massive event planned for Chicago in early August with Daft Punk among the headliners. Now festival founder Perry Farrell is talking about taking it across the world…
“I’m going to look to take it global,” Farrell told MTV.com. “I want to put together an event around the world in the next ten years that will refashion, redress, and transform. It’s something I’m looking into now, and if it happens, it will happen quickly. That’s my ambition.”
Linked inextricably with Gen-X culture in a fashion that was lampooned so memorably on that episode of The Simpsons, the Lollapalooza circus kicked off in ’91 and was the biggest festival of its type throughout the decade, bringing big-time alternative acts like Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Hole and Sonic Youth to the masses as it traveled across the country.
The love died in 1998 due to lack of interest which led to a five-yearn hiatus, followed by a brief return in 2003. But it’s been put back on the agenda in the past two years with great results, and this year’s event will be headlined by Pearl Jam with support from Daft Punk, Ben Harper, Muse, Iggy Pop, Interpol and Farrell’s own new project Satellite Party. Who knows what Farrell has in store? Stay tuned.

And Justice for Michael Jackson

French pop dance duo Justice sent out advance promo copies of their Prince style symbol album this week and revealed that they’re passionate fans of both Britney Spears and Michael Jackson.
“Her vocal was the best acapella we ever heard. She is not a faker,” they insisted on remixing Britney Spears. “It is not by chance she is a big pop star.”
The former graphic designer duo also boasted about ‘waking up one morning as musicians’ and revealed that new (ultra-cheesy) single D.A.N.C.E. was directly inspired by the paedophile related trials and tribulations of Michael Jackson.
“Us, we were so sure he was innocent, we wrote the song,” Gaspard explained.
“We wrote the lyrics as tribute to him.”
Their fawning support of the fading global superstar contrasted markedly with the attitude of fellow 80s popster Boy George who last year criticized Jackson as he described being arrested by New York cops after they found cocaine in his flat.
“At one point I was taken to Bellevue hospital and I cut my foot and I was chained to a bed at the hospital,” George told Australia’s Herald Sun.
“It was like what have I done? Michael Jackson is roaming the streets, O.J. Simpson killed his wife, let’s get real here,” he added.
Gary Numan collaborator Ade Fenton also appeared less than sympathetic earlier this year when he chatted to Skrufff about being taunted in London for wearing heavy black eye makeup.
“I don’t get seriously hassled by cavemen anymore but I did get a really, really bizarre insult the other day,” Ade recalled. ‘Fucking hell, it’s Michael Jackson’ was the comment thrown this time. Unbelievable,” he mused.
Roger Sanchez, who worked with Jackson in the 90s was also muted referring to him as ‘an anomaly’ in a recent interview with Skrufff in December.
“He’s an incredibly talented person that I’m just not sure whether he can recover from the position he’s in. I have a sneaking suspicion it’s going to be a bit difficult for him to come back,” the S Man mused.“Everything is so transitory nowadays, I don’t think he’s as relevant as he used to be. He’s gotten relegated to this freak hall of fame which is a shame because he’s such a talented individual and he’s made some amazing music. But unfortunately, sometimes things take the course that they do and people lose touch,” said Roger.

Dutch develop powdered alcohol for minors

From the people who brought you hash bars, legalised prostitution and clogs, comes something the kids can enjoy: powdered booze. Dutch students recently developed a product called Booz2Go, a powdered alcohol which can be legally sold to minors. Booz2Go will be sold in 20 gram packets, which when added with water creates a bubbly, lime-flavoured drink with 3 percent alcohol content. The students have managed to get around the drinking age laws by selling the product in powder form, opening the product to a younger market.
“We are aiming for the youth market. They are really more into it because you can compare it with Bacardi-mixed drinks,” 20-year-old Harm van Elderen told Reuters. The idea was brought up by Elderen and four classmates as part of their final year project.
This product has gathered the attention from a number of companies, as they can avoid the taxes that would usually come with alcohol by selling them in powdered form. Booz2go will cost 1-1.5 euros ($1.60-$2.40).

Colette N°7
****
Who is Colette ? Behind this old-fashioned French name isn’t a DJ. Colette is an ultra-trendy Parisian concept store, much like our Bangkok’s Manga or Playground.
In this seventh installment of their compilation, Michel Gaubert and Marie Branellec, two open-minded selectors, have chosen 16 tracks related to the number 7 with a focus on the seventh art that is the cinema. Built as the soundtrack of an imaginary movie, this selection is oriented up-tempo for its most part.
From the abstract hip-hop of One Self to Isolee’s electronica, the first CD works as an injection of eclectic beats and styles. The highlight being Larry Levan’s disco remix of Bumblebee Unlimited, an irresistibly groovy disco gem.The second CD has a darker atmosphere, thanks to electro genius Vitalic. Through 15 tracks, including 4 by the man himself, this works as a very personal mix of his musical influences, from the evident electro-godfathers Front 242 to the barocco piano of Wim Mertens. To remind us of the dance-floor artist he is, closing the mix is his previously unreleased interpretation of Giorgio Moroder’s classic The Chase.

Bugged out presents : Simian Mobile Disco – Suck My Deck
***
It’s a surprise to see the two Simian Mobile Disco ( SMD ) blokes chosen for the third release of the Suck My Deck series. Unlike the two previous opus, mixed respectively by Ivan Smagghe and Damian Lazarus, SMD has the responsibility to step away from the minimal bleeps and intelligent electro.
On the paper, the tracklist looks nothing like homogeneous : hip house, electro, baile funke, techno. It is quite a challenge to blend together so many styles in just an hour. After listening, the quality of mixing leave the listener doubtful but with a better understanding of what geese must feel when force-fed to make foie gras. The lack of subtlety is compensated by the music selection. Sebastian’s Walkman proves the banger it is when dropped in a mix, but it is Make some noise ! by Jojo de Freq that represents the climax of the CD. Its crescendo siren left the listener wonder of its potential damage on a dance-floor. SMD then proves their DJ skills by perfectly blending it with their own remix of Klaxon’s Magick.

Karl Lagerfeld – Les Musiques que J’aime
***

In these days of football players turning DJs and writers wanna-be MC, it is no less surprising to see the eccentric Karl Lagerfeld compiling the music he likes. Audacious and talented designer for Chanel, his wit and volubility made of him a media favorite. The double-CD package design, with an imposing black and white picture of Herr Lagerfeld on the front, could have the listener think he is in for a selection of the national orchestra of Vienna best bits. A quick scan at the tracklist contradicts the thought and the participation of Michel Gaubert ( see Colette CD ) at the compilation reinsures of the good taste Karl Lagerfeld is gifted.
In the manner of his fashion shows, which Gaubert has been in charge of sound tracking for years, the CDs prove eclectic. Split in two parts, at home and at work, the first is the most surprising. Opening with the sweet folk of Devendra Benhart, it features also the soulful Mighty Girl of electronic producers Lindstrom and Thomas. Michael Mayer brings his minimal touch to the record preceding LCD Soundsystem hypnotically singing Too Much Love.
60’s rock chicks The Pipettes turn the guitars louder joined in this effort by Planning To Rock and Smokers Die Younger. Karl Lagerfeld proves his humor by throwing in his selection the cute mambo of Xavier Cugat and what could be called a concerto for pans and kitchen sinks closing the first CD.
The second CD, shorter in time, lists the tracks used during the recent Chanel fashion shows. Michel Gaubert mixes The Fall’s Blindness into Stravinsky blended in The Bell Orchestra as a prelude to the selection. Credited a second time is DFA with a Goldfrapp remix, and the unsurprising but always welcome appearance of Joakim.Out of his 60 Ipods, Karl Lagerfeld has put together a wonderful selection and if only for the at home CD it asserts how talented an artist he is.

Dizzee Rascal – Maths and English
***
Of the UK rap scene, two iconic singers stand out for having gained respect from the underground scene and being featured on the billboard charts : The Streets, aka Mike Skinner, and Dizzee Rascal. The latter has just released his third studio album after a 3-year wait.
Each british hip-hop album release here should be celebrated, especially when it proves to be quality. While Dizzee’s second album Showtime received a mild success from both the media and the hip-hop head, Maths and English is a strong comeback for his protagonist.
Don’t look for The Neptunes in the credits, or a Snoop Dog featuring, this album is grime and while the bling bling temptation might have been huge for Dizzee, he intelligently avoided it. Instead, after the menacing first track, Pussy’ole brings the listener back in time with an old-school US hip hop sample.
The whole album sounds dark and tense pushing Dizzee’s flow to its best level so far. His lyrics sometimes fall into deja-vu rap, not helped by the easy use of the f-word among others, but the electro beats and frenetic claps save even the most average track.
Crossing the bridge between grime and drum’n’bass, the collaboration with Shy FX on Da Feelin’, injects a soulful deebee break halfway through the CD and contends to be a future club anthem. Other artists featured on the album are Arctic Monkeys’ young singer Alex Turner and the witty Lily Allen, both opening the album and the genre to something new. With this album, Dizzee has released his most consistent and eclectic album. Being a fierce Londoner, like his city, the music is influenced by different styles, from reggae to hip-hop through electronica and drum’n’bass. What the US hip-hop fails to do, afraid of experimenting and pushing its own culture
